I've never tried anything but straw and sand. I love the use of sand because it dries up the poo and keeps the ammonia down. I'd be interested in trying this though. Anything to make the coop smell better. We clean our coop about every two weeks, replacing all beddings and floor cover and it still gets a little rank.
