This past week was crazy busy, very tiring and wicked exciting. It kicked off with a weekend chock full of chicken chat as my husband and spoke with countless chicken supporters on the town green during the annual fall festival. The Zoning Commission meeting to legalize backyard chickens will be held this coming Monday and the town is currently looking for a bigger meeting room as attendance in favor of chicken-keeping is expected to exceed capacity under the fire code. RIGHT ON! Tune in on Monday, September 16th at 7:00 pm EST as I stream the hearing LIVE here.  There are two other matters on the agenda before mine, so punctuality isn’t critical.

Molting continues to plague the older flockers, but signs of progress are evident.

Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle) has pin feathers emerging from her neck and tail, which are painful, so I try not to handle her and continue to give her high-protein snacks and treats.

The Olive Egger, above and Black Copper Marans pullet, below, are both too young to molt, so they’re responsible for carrying the egg production load while the molting girlz devote their energies to feather production.

The other exciting event this week was the hatching of four chicks. Blaze is the likely baby daddy of several of the chicks, but it appears that my dear departed Brutus may be the father of at least one of them. ♥ I don’t know the breeds of the hens whose eggs they hatched from with the exception of the little brown and white chick, which was Vera’s egglet (Red Sex Link pullet, below).

Blaze (Black Copper Marans rooster) and Vera (Red Sex Link pullet)
Blaze, the proud papa.
Thanks for visiting today and have a great weekend!
