Flock Focus Friday, 12/27/13

Christmas week here at Blazing Trails Farm was a challenge with on again, off again snow alternating with rain and sunshine. We are expecting eggs to hatch this coming week and are looking forward to sharing that experience with you as it happens, live!

This Olive Egger has made it her mission to remove the berries from the coop garland.

The Olive Egger in the nest box on the right has been broody for nearly two weeks. When the eggs in the incubator hatch, I’ll slip them underneath her to raise.

Lola (Columbian Wyandotte hen) has finished molting and her new feathers look spectacular.

Sparky (Black Copper Marans roo) and ellen deHeneres, (a Marans hen cross between a Black Copper Marans and a Wheaten Marans).

Christmas morning breakfast consisted of steel cut and regular oatmeal with blueberries, apples and bananas. I put out several loaf pans so that there was no bickering and nobody left out.

Spartacus (Serama X Red Sex Link) and his mom, Windy (a Blue Splash Marans)

Caesar, a Serama cockerel began crowing this week and it was adorable.

Nobody loves eating snow more than Rachel (Bantam Cochin Frizzle)

Most chickens dislike snow, but mine have gotten used to it. I suppose that’s what happens when you live in New England.
