This week’s photo essay from Blazing Trails Farm feels dark as most of the week has been snowy, rainy, foggy, grey and overall, blah. Thankfully the temperatures have been above freezing most of the time, which has given the roosters a chance to recover a bit from frostbite. Please enjoy the photos and your weekend!

When it snows, the chickens will come out of the coops if I shovel, only to pace back and forth between coops. Some exercise is better than no exercise I suppose.

What? Do I have something on my face?
The fluffy white stuff was short-lived as torrential rain moved in and made a slushy mess of things.

Blaze chases Sparky a couple times a day to remind him who is in charge of the backyard.  They’re both Black Copper Marans. Blaze is Sparky’s dad.

Rainy eggs.
Blaze & Portia (Serama hen).
Caesar (Serama cockerel)
Blaze and the ladies.
Blaze (left) and Sparky (right) maintain a respectful distance from one another.
Thanks for joining me and have a great week!

Thanks for all that you do. I follow most of your pages. I could really use this. I used everyone of my chicks last time due to cooler weather at night. We also plan to make a better brooder box this year.

I'm finding it difficult to identify the 'head bully' though, so would love some tips about how to do this. It seems that all of them bully this one hen, who I have had to isolate a few times now, although always isolate alongside the flock. Even with slow integration back into the flock, she always finds herself on the bottom of things … she used to be the second highest hen, but molted late and everyone began picking… Read more »
